The Andean Trade Preference Act: past accomplishments and present circumstances warrant its immediate renewal and expansion
Article Abstract:
Republican lawmakers have pledged the textile industry to exclude or limit textile imports from the Andean Trade Preference Act in return for support of President Bush's trade promotion authority. Compelling U.S. interests, such as the promotion of free trade and fight against the narcotics trade and terrorism, mandate the renewal of the Andean Trade Preference Act. This could be done while expanding the act to uphold the regrettable, but non-retractable, deal with the textile industry.
