The color of justice
Article Abstract:
Americans must show they have learned from the Rodney King verdict, and the court system that made it possible, by recognizing manifestations of discrimination in the judicial system and taking steps toward changing them. African Americans can no longer be excluded from decision-making jobs at the state and federal levels of the judicial system. Discrimination against African Americans in jury selection must end. Venue changes in racially explosive cases must not result in the exclusion of African Americans. Ending police brutality against African Americans must be a national priority.

Double exposure; did the second Rodney King trial violate double jeopardy?
Article Abstract:
Opinions differ as to whether the federal civil rights trial of the Rodney King case constituted double jeopardy and an abuse of the dual sovereignty exception. The ACLU has in general opposed the dual sovereignty exception but shortly after the acquittals in the first Rodney King trial stated that this exception should be permissible in the case of federal civil rights violations. Some experts fear that this exception will only be used when the first acquittal was not politically popular. Other factors to consider include the emotional toll a second trial exacts from a defendant.

Holding out; juries vs. public pressure
Article Abstract:
Jurors need to be able to decide cases on the evidence presented to them in the courtroom and justice may not be served if social and political pressures are implicit. Politicians should respect the jury system and not deride the jurors' decision, as some did after the Rodney King verdict. A criminal case should be confined to a determination of the guilt or innocence of the alleged criminal, but in high profile cases such as Rodney King's the defendants may start to represent all police officers who victimize minorities.
