The fifty-third session of the UN Commission on Human Rights

Article Abstract:

The 53rd session of the UN Commission on Human Rights, which met in March and April 1997, deepened its commitment to human rights but argued over economic policies that favored northern hemisphere nations. The Commission advocated death penalty abolition, upheld the rights of innocents in regional armed conflicts, and denounced terrorism. Southern hemisphere debtor countries protested against structural adjustments imposed on them by international economic regulations.
