The price of free labor; companies using interns as unpaid employees may run afoul of wage laws
Article Abstract:
Companies using unpaid interns may be violating the wage laws as the Fair Labor Standards Act limits the kind of work they can do. Employers must not derive immediate advantage from them, nor can they displace regular workers for the law's minimum wage provisions to not apply to them. Other factors the Labor Department and the courts consider in deciding whether to classify interns as employees include whether training is to benefit an intern as well as an understanding that the intern will not be paid for the time spent in training.

Three strikes a soft pitch; most states will send few to prison under new laws
Article Abstract:
An Oct 1997 study by the National Institute of Justice on "three strikes and you're out" sentences states that the first two states to enact such legislation report its impact on prison populations to be not as severe as forecast. The researchers believe three-strikes laws passed by the federal government and 22 other states between 1993 and 1995 will also show little impact on prison populations. California courts do report case backlogs from the law.
