The truth of equality; disabled persons are equally endowed with inalienable rights
Article Abstract:
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 represents a step as important as the abolition of slavery and equal rights for women along the road to true equality for all human beings. Maybe that law, which recognizes that human worth transcends disability as it does race and gender, will also lead people to recognize the error in Roe v. Wade. Then they will realize that if human worth transcends disability, that worth does not depend on how far a fetus has developed or on the degree of its dependency.

Colorado's Amendment 2 blocked; court says referendum barring gay-rights laws denies equal protection
Article Abstract:
The Colorado Supreme Court has in Evans v. Romer blocked the state's anti-gay Amendment 2 from taking effect, ordering the state to show a compelling state interest justifying such an amendment at an Oct 1993 hearing on its constitutionality. The court ruled that forbidding legislative protection for gays violated their right to equality before the law. Referenda on gay rights may occur in a number of other states and observers are interested to see if other courts adopt Colorado's reasoning.

The ADA and the NCAA; learning-disabled athletes challenge course requirements
Article Abstract:
Butler v. NCAA argues that the core course requirement of the NCAA, the governing body of college sports, violates the Americans with Disabilities Act by finding some disabled athletes ineligible because some of their high school coursework received the designation 'special education classes.' The NCAA rules are unwilling to certify as core courses those classes taught below the school's regular instructional level regardless of course content.
