To fault or not to fault

Article Abstract:

Proposals to reinstate fault-only divorce overlook the main problems that cause divorce and overestimate the role difficulty of divorce plays in preserving a marriage. Most marriages that end do so for good reason, often resulting in better lives for children involved, but the best way to ensure that would be extensive social services to reduce the number of bad marriages and help women and children after divorce. The rate of marital breakdown bears no apparent relation to the stringency of divorce laws.

Public tunes out battered women

Article Abstract:

The OJ Simpson trial briefly drew attention to battered women but almost as quickly dropped the issue despite a host of unanswered questions and unabated violence. Important points that the public rarely addresses include whether protection or escape is available, how well we deter offenders, and what we are doing to meet victims' needs. Each of these reveals how little we as a society do regarding this problem, often despite many proposed solutions that merely require political will.

You must remember this...

Article Abstract:

Disciplining six-year-old Jonathan Prevette for sexual harassment when all he did was kiss a classmate may have been an overreaction, but it is still true that many cases of serious harassment never make it to a courtroom. The best way to prevent inadvertent sexual harassment by adults is education and careful policies for children. Progress will not happen if we generalize from overreactions such as the Prevette case.
