Launching trademark law into cyberspace: should the domain name system be federalized?
Article Abstract:
Domain names should fall under federal trademark laws and the system of protecting them should be federalized under the Patent and Trademark Office. Domain names are names which identify Internet addresses and serve valuable functions. Network Solutions, Inc. is a private company which contracts with the National Science Foundation to provide registration and maintenance services. The patent office should absorb its functions because it is not capable in its current form of properly administering the system.

The Federal Trade Commission, seeking to regulate Internet businesses, scored a partial victory in a provision in the budget bill passed by Congress
Article Abstract:
The Federal Trade Commission interprets the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 to require Web sites directed at children to provide notice of their information collection and dissemination practices, as well as an opportunity to opt the child out. It is unclear whether the Congress will ever adopt the FTC proposal. Meanwhile, however, the FTC has begun enforcing it against Web sites practicing deceptive personal information collection and dissemination procedures.
