Ups and downs: the first steps of going solo
Article Abstract:
A lawyer who decided during law school to become a sole practitioner recounts his experience. A mentor helped him get set up in his office building in Baltimore, MD, teaching him about legal billing and referring some cases to him. After the first year, he developed a marketing plan, deciding to specialize in bankruptcy law since this specialty seemed to be lacking among lawyers in his area. The recession forced him to branch out into other business law areas. He had support staff problems along the way but feels that the indepence of solo practice makes it all worthwhile.

'Private attorneys general': the new watchdogs; citizen groups feel the EPA is going soft, so they're initiating private enforcement actions
Article Abstract:
Environmental agencies at both the state and federal level want to work with industry and better their states' economic climates, and citizens' groups are taking up the litigation cudgels instead. Citizens are armed in this fight by the increasing amount of hazardous-product information industry is required to make public. Plaintiffs range from national groups such as the Natural Resources Defense Council to California grass-roots citizens' groups. Beyond California, long a hotbed of grass roots activism, the public in the Southeast is fighting environmental racism.
