When standards don't match, companies pay; compatible tech standards should be a key issue for both sides in contract negotiations
Article Abstract:
Corporate counsel for software developers, telecommunications carriers and developers of equipment and software need to pay particular attention to technological standards when drafting and negotiating contractual arrangements with their respective technology partners. Focus on standards as a primary contractual issue, financial incentive to encourage technology developers to achieve interoperability, and encouraging the active participation of industry-standards bodies are among the methods which can achieve this aim.

Alternative sentences: not just women's issue
Article Abstract:
Lighter or alternative sentences that consider the parental duties of an offender help preserve families and contribute to the development of the children. While the primary caregiver is usually the mother, sometimes the father plays a vital or even predominant role in the childrens' growth and ability to form normal attachments. Many judges have long considered family duties in sentencing, but at least some jurisdictions should formalize the process and either modify their guidelines or instruct judges appropriately.

Restore flexibility to U.S. sentences
Article Abstract:
Federal mandatory minimum sentences have made the crime situation worse because they lack balance and take away all judicial discretion in sentencing. The sentencing disparity for those using different kinds of cocaine is a prime example of such sentences' irrationality. Although recent reports suggest a decrease in crime rates, political rhetoric about crime does not seem to wane. Long-term solutions, such as alternative sentences for non-violent offenders, would reintroduce balance into the criminal justice system.
