Why a bad NAFTA is worse than no NAFTA
Article Abstract:
Congress should reject the North American Free Trade Agreement because it completely ignores the interests of both Mexican and American farmers, workers and environmentalists. With the current NAFTA draft, US industry is likely to gravitate to Mexico where low wages and more lenient environmental, health and safety standards are the norm. In Mexico, jobs in small business and agriculture will be destroyed and multinational corporations will surely not look kindly on attempts to raise Mexican wages. American blue collar workers will suffer job loss and pressure to decrease wages and benefits.

NAFTA's ties to political authoritarianism in Mexico
Article Abstract:
Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari's opponents charged that he became president through electoral fraud and in response to this and other pressures Salinas announced a democratization of Mexico on Jul 7, 1988. He is committed to the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the head of the opposition party opposes it, so it is unlikely that the 1992 presidential election will be a democratic one. Both Salinas and the Bush administration favor the ability of US industry to secure cheap Mexican labor within Mexican borders which NAFTA would ensure.

How come one team still has to play with its shoelaces tied together?
Article Abstract:
There is need for labor law reform that can fulfill the promise of the Wagner Act and make it possible for workers to freely form unions. Strong employer opposition, manipulations to delay elections, the relationship between pre-election delay and election outcome, and the high percentage of petition withdrawals are all indicative of a climate that discourages labor union formation. Workers do not have a fair chance at self-organization for collective bargaining.
