Zealous civil lawyers now fear prosecution

Article Abstract:

Criminal defense lawyers say prosecutors are trying to intimidate them with criminal charges, but prosecutors reply that lawyers must observe limits on zealous advocacy. Though the government case against six Florida lawyers accused of helping the Cali cocaine cartel is going well, most such efforts have failed on had only mild success. The fight also includes whether clients' names must be put on an IRS form disclosing receipt of cash sums over $10,000 and subpoenaing lawyers or searching their offices.

Lawyers begin the post-vote exodus

Article Abstract:

Only a month has elapsed since the 1996 federal election, but government attorneys who want other employment during Pres Clinton's second term have already started leaving. Some of the departees are probably returning to the same private sector firms. Attorney General Janet Reno awaits Pres Clinton's decision on whether he will offer her second term employment, but Civil Rights Division head Deval L. Patrick has announced plans to return to his family in Boston.

New explorers hope for riches in India; U.S. lawyers see opportunity as the world's largest democracy modernizes

Article Abstract:

US law firms are starting to see India as a good place to set up a foreign office. New York's Reid and Priest, Chadbourne and Parke and White and Case have all established offices there. Reid and Priest cites India's industrial revolution and 1991 economic liberalization as creating a good environment for foreign investment and much work for lawyers. The indigenous competition has given other firms second thoughts about establishing a presence in India.
