Common carriers' entry into multimedia services
Article Abstract:
The assets and skills of telecommunications common carriers (TCCs) in delivering multimedia services were assessed through the help of a database called MOSAICO, which documents the initiatives taken by common carriers in multimedia from 1990 to 1995. TCCs were found to possess some of the assets and skills required to assume the service provider role. The importance of promoting cooperative relations with software manufacturers, service providers, broadcasters and media companies to maintain a competitive edge in service provision was also established.

Network subscription and services usage in European telecommunications industries
Article Abstract:
Data from nine European telecommunications industries from 1980-1992 are used to examine efficiency changes for telecommunications carriers within the contexts of a network expanding under constant services intensity and of industries facing increasing demand for extra service. It is concluded that there is no reason to prevent competition in extra services even if they result in regulatory difficulties for the smallest carriers. No allocative efficiency estimates are given for the joint management of network and services.
