Local monopsony and free riders
Article Abstract:
The incentive to exercise monopsony power by retailers is to exploit the difference between average and marginal costs in the distribution of inputs. However, this incentive does not carry with it the ability to perform. Ability is gained only by forming alliances among downstream retailers across local markets. Monopsony power only develops as bargaining leverage is enhanced by gaining a considerable market share nationwide. Local and national market shares are significant in the exercise of monopsony power.
