Mary Gordon tried to bring in the history concerning the United States and Ireland during the 1960s in her book Pearl and has tried to weave the public and political events with other issues in the book. She reminiscences about her father, who was a person who loved her tremendously but had evil ideas due to his beliefs and her efforts in trying to retain this dualism in her book 'The Shadow Man' which is the biography of her father.
