Bombing trial continues to spark media controversies
Article Abstract:
The trial of suspected Oklahoma City bombers Timothy J. McVeigh and Terry Nichols continued to trigger conflicts between the trial judge, the defense counsel and the media in late 1996 and early 1997. US District Court Judge Richard Matsch released a number of documents in Jan 1997 after the press had argued that too many documents were being sealed. Later in the month, he ruled that closed-circuit television coverage of the trial could be set up in Oklahoma City for the victims. The press will not be admitted, but a live audio feed will be set up at a Denver pressroom near the court.

Access rights outweigh juror privacy
Article Abstract:
The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled in Bell v. Evatt (ex parte The Greenville News) that the public's right to be informed about post-conviction juror misconduct hearings outweighed the privacy interests of jurors. The trial court felt that redaction of juror's names would not be adequate protection and denied two newspapers access to depositions. The state high court noted a presumption of openness and found that redaction would adequately protect the privacy interests of jurors.
