Building on Isaac Asimov's Foundation: an Eaton discussion with Joseph D. Miller as moderator
Article Abstract:
Greg Bear, Gregory Benford and David Brin have signed contracts with HarperCollins Publishers and the Isaac Asimov estate to write in the Foundation series. Brin points out that the series presented issues which, upon resolution, bred other issues that have to be resolved. Benford wants to present in his work his idea why Asimov unified the Robots and the Foundation series. Bear, meanwhile, will be focusing on a single character, Hari Seldon. All three writers agree that the generous funding was also a strong motivator.

The case against space
Article Abstract:
The common arguments for space exploration are all insupportable. Arguments that focus on space travel's economic benefits, on its defensive or preventive potential, and on man's inherent need to explore and inhabit unknown territories cannot withstand close scrutiny. Given the illogic and weakness of these positions, it is proposed that there is no compelling reason for mankind to pursue space exploration at the present time.
