Campaign reporting: a guide to election records and events
Article Abstract:
Press access to political campaign events often depends on to what extent the events are public and whether they are held on public property. Private events on private property can be inaccessible because journalists are not privileged to enter private property. Semi-public and public events can still be influenced by restrictions on the size of the press pool and time, place and manner restrictions. The Federal Election Commission reviews campaign finance matters and provides for public disclosure. Voter registration information is governed by state law.

Publishers must receive notice before being banned from prisons
Article Abstract:
The US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled in Montcalm Publishing Corp. v. Beck that, when prison officials deny prisoners access to publications that they subscribe to, officials must provide publishers with notice of the policy. A Virginia prison denied two prisoners access to copies of Gallery magazine on obscenity grounds. The prisoners were given notice of the policy but the publisher was not. The Court found that the publisher did have a First Amendment interest as a party that wished to communicate with the prisoners.
