Document in the history of science fiction: Karel Capek's preface to Bila Nemoc
Article Abstract:
This article presents a translation of Karel Capek's preface to his play Bila Nemoc. In this translated version of his preface, Capek discusses his influences in the creation of his play. Focus is given to the dependent relationship between individuality, human rights and affiliation with various imposed and autocratic categories of class, nation, and race. Capek is interested in the representation of this dependence, and the contrast between categories, in world-conflicts.

Matters of Translation: Karel Capek and Paul Selver
Article Abstract:
The author defends Paul Selver's translations of Karel Capek's work. Focus is given to Selver's translation of Bila nemoc and R.U.R. Given the collaboration between the author and the translator and also taking into consideration the possible interference of a publishing committee in producing the final product, the author concludes that Selver's translations remain true to the original texts.

The author discusses the philosophical themes in Karel Capek's play R.U.R. Focus is given to the importance of the character Damon, who was removed from the English translation. The author interprets the independent self-consciousness experienced by the robots in the play using the work of Hegel.
