Emblematic pictures for the less privileged in Shakespeare's England
Article Abstract:
The imaginations of the public Renaissance England were influenced by the religious and symbolic imagery embodied in sets of emblem books published during the period. These books were characterized by a motto illustrated by a picture and explained in an allegorical piece of verse. The symbols were also reproduced in inns and the rooms of public houses as well as heraldic devices. William Shakespeare regularly referred to the symbols contained in these books for his own religious and allegorical allusions, allowing the public to recognize metaphors that he used in his own plays.

Quarles as dramatist
Article Abstract:
Illustrator Francis Quarles produced an emblem book depicting Christ and his church as young lovers using the imagery derived from early representations of the Greek Cupid and Psyche. Quarles also wrote a play titled 'A Virgin Widow' which used the allusions of romantic and spiritual love in the Bible's 'Song of Songs. He explored theatrical dialogue using the format of the text that accompanied the emblems, in which Biblical scenes are discussed by two characters.

The confusions of 'Gallathea': John Lyly as popular dramatist
Article Abstract:
John Lyly's play 'Gallathea' successfully crosses the border between drama and popular theater by emphasizing physicality rather than ideas. The play's dynamism conveyed through tension, confusion and desire exceeds drama's tradition of allegorical and intellectual expression. By drawing on the public's interest in desire, Lyly also creates a desire for and interest in the theater.
