Investigative reporters underutilize the Freedom of Information Act. The National Security Agency processes more requests under this act about unidentified flying objects than other topics, the Drug Enforcement Administration has more requests from prisoners than reporters, and reporter requests make up approximately 1% of inquiries for the Environmental Protection Agency.

Columbia Academy, an alternative school in Palm Beach, FL, broke various laws about special education administration and finance, and hired unqualified staff. The subsequent investigation closed Columbia and the district superintendent was fired.
