International television coverage of Beijing Spring 1989: a comparative approach
Article Abstract:
The differences in the coverage of Beijing Spring, the 1989 student movement in China, by different television networks reflect that the ideological frames used by news agencies conform to the fundamental news norms of specific nations. The coverage of the movement by CNN, CBS, Taiwan Television, and Chinese Central Television differed significantly. The reflection of national values in the presentation of important international events hampers the democratizing effect of the media in a globalized news system. This suggests the formulation of normative standards of framing devices for fair and objective coverage.

The body politic, the bodies of women, and the politics of famine in U.S. television coverage of famine in the Horn of Africa
Article Abstract:
U.S. television coverage of famines in Somalia and Ethiopia traditionally depict African women as dependent, and men as symbols of power. Media presents women from the American perceptions of the African American woman, instead of focusing on the political and economic causes of famine. The journalists focus on women's shrunken bodies to map the deprivation and hunger of the area. The usual image is that of an irresponsible impoverished mother having too many children. Knowledge of U.S. televiewers about the role of African women gets influenced by the gender-biased media coverage.

Anarchists wreak havoc in downtown Minneapolis: a multi-level study of media coverage of radical protest
Article Abstract:
Three major factors can affect media coverage of radical protests: news values, bias, and ideology. Researchers studied the coverage of anarchist protests in Minneapolis in 1986 to 1988. The majority of the anarchists' protests involved public demonstrations. Discussion of the anarchists' philosophy was often absent in mainstream media coverage. Instead, these stories focused on actions with a short explanation not on emotional attachment to the issues as seen in alternative press coverage.
