Iowa court says data base is trade secret
Article Abstract:
The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that the data base used by the state's Legislative Service Bureau and supplied by Election Data Services Inc is protectable as a trade secret and not a public record subject to the state's open records law. An Iowa citizen had requested the Bureau for copies of the data base, which included information and maps used for redistricting, stating that such information constituted a public record. The court disagreed, citing the company's attempts in contract and software encryption to protect their product under the state's trade secret law.
