Conflicting cases cloud question of access
Article Abstract:
The Puerto Rico Supreme Court and the US Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit have taken different sides on the constitutionality of a Puerto Rican criminal procedure rule requiring closure of pretrial proceedings. In El Vocero de Puerto Rico v. Puerto Rico, the Supreme Court ruled that the rule was an unconstitutional restriction of freedom of information. The US Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit, however, in Rivera-Puig v. Garcia-Rosario, ruled in favor of the rule's constitutionality.

Access to Gates deposition in Microsoft antitrust trial affirmed
Article Abstract:
The US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit ruled, in US v. Microsoft Corp., that the media should have access to CEO Bill Gates' deposition in the current antitrust suit. Several news organizations intervened to enforce public access to the deposition under a 1913 federal statute. Microsoft argued that the statute was outdated and inapplicable. The Court agreed that the statute was antiquated but said that only Congress could change it.
