News media access to executions contested
Article Abstract:
The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has ruled that California cannot deny the news media access to viewing the entire execution when the death penalty is carried out, but Oregon and Washington are restricting media access. In California First Amendment Coalition v. Calderon, the Ninth Circuit upheld a District Court order granting media access. The Oregon Department of Corrections has passed a rule giving the superintendent discretion to limit media access and regulate coverage. Washington is considering a bill which would reduce the number of reporters that could attend executions.

Korean-American reporter arrested for reporting 'false accusations' about company
Article Abstract:
Korean-American radio reporter Richard Choi was arrested in Seoul, South Korea, for a report aired on a Los Angeles radio station. The report publicized rumors that Hyundai Corp. was considering acquiring media company Hankook Ilbo, which filed a complaint in South Korea. A South Korean law prohibits media reports of rumors that may jeopardize a company's financial stability. The Committee to Protect Journalists and the World Press Freedom Committee protested, but Choi was scheduled for trial in January 1998 and could be subject to a five-year prison sentence.
