Preacher's vigil, landlord's watch: Charity by the clock in Adam Bede
Article Abstract:
George Eliot's doctrine of sympathy as evinced in 'Adam Bede', while having much in common with the moral attitudes of her equally compassionate contemporaries, was at the same time a reflection of the ethical ambitions of literary realism. Alongside her advocacy of a realist sympathy, Eliot provides a counter discourse in 'Adam Bede' that addresses a need to protect charity from the worst consequences of its systematic administration.
