Silver fork writers and readers: social contexts of a best seller

Article Abstract:

The social and political ferment happening during the 1820s and 1830s saw the predominance of the 'Regency romances,' otherwise known as the 'silver fork' or fashionable novels. As precursors of the modern best sellers, these silver fork novels were popularized by Henry Colburn and depicted the elitist world of aristocratic society during the Regency. Integral to the genre were the duelling scene, gambling scene, dinner scene and dancing scene. The arranged marriage and adulterous relations were also part of the formula.

Publisher has no duty to warn readers of accuracy of information

Article Abstract:

The Hawaii Supreme Court has ruled consistently with other courts that publishers are not liable for the accuracy of information in books they publish. A couple using a travel guide to Hawaii sued the publisher of the guide after suffering injury at a beach. They argued that the guide was a product, so the publisher had a duty to warn them about dangerous conditions at the beaches listed in the guide. The court disagreed, stating no court has found publishers liable unless the publisher has guaranteed the information.

Judges cannot rule that sex offender information may not be discloseable

Article Abstract:

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled in Kansas v. Snelling that a state district court judge erred in ruling that a sex offender's registration under the Kansas Sex Offender Registration Act should not be open to the public because to do so would constitute cruel and unusual punishment. The state Supreme Court said that a trial court cannot decide where to apply the public access provisions of the Act based on the facts of an individual case.
