The classical treatment of Don Juan in Tirso, Moliere, and Mozart: what cultural work does it perform?
Article Abstract:
The playwrights Tirso de Molina and Moliere and the opera composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart portray the fictitious character Don Juan as a rebel against feudal patriarchy. Don Juan's ultimate condemnation to hell eventually reasserts the power of this social system in which men of position exercise control over women and the lower classes. These works were written while feudal patriarchy was under attack from the dissatisfied social classes it excluded from power. They do not reflect a staunch defense of the system so much as an argument for patriarchy's ability to progress toward greater social justice.

August Strindberg: a modernist in spite of himself
Article Abstract:
August Strindberg was a modernist playwright even though he did not see himself as one. He considered himself a realist and wrote his plays to show his vision of reality. Yet his works convey a psychological expressionism, with reality more than it seems and everything having a spiritual symbolism. His vision was shaped by psychic crises from 1894 to 1897 and he studied science, mysticism and mythology to understand what he had gone through.
