Deep into 'bandit country.'
Article Abstract:
Southern Yemen was taken over by radical socialists after the withdrawal of Britain as a colonial power. Access to South Yemen by westerners was not easy, but the country has moved toward liberalization after a 1986 civil war led to financial problems. The Yemen Republic was set up in 1990, from both the south and north. Aid to Yemen was reduced when Yemen did not become involved in the Gulf War. Yemenis had to leave the Gulf States where they were working, and a drop in petroleum prices also hit the economy. Tribal independence means that hi-jackings are common, but hostages are not usually harmed. Non-Yemenis were involved in the deaths of tourists taken hostage, and Yemenis generally are friendly to travelers.
