BBC's voyage of Discovery

Article Abstract:

An alliance between UK broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd. (BBC) and US-based Discovery Communications is expected to be announced at the beginning of 1998 after two years of negotiations. Discovery plans to provide the BBC with financial backing to make programmes, in exchange for use of all factual programmes made by the BBC. The Joint Venture Programming deal will guarantee the BBC funds of at least $175 million, while Discovery will have first refusal on all programming ideas. The BBC hopes to expand into the US via a dedicated cable station to be funded by Discovery.

Rolling ambition: the global news gurus gathering in Berlin for News World '96 are all watching their budgets as much as their rivals' services

Article Abstract:

BBC News is facing a difficult task in introducing a 24-hour domestic TV news channel by the end of 1997. It will have to be funded without any extra licence-fee money, and BBC News chief executive Tony Hall will be seeking a 30% efficiency saving from BBC News's annual budget during the next five years. There are concerns about how the company will maintain the quality of its other output whilst launching a viable rolling news service.
