Dark shadow over US skies
Article Abstract:
Rupert Murdoch's direct broadcast satellite (DBS) named Sky, is due to commence a full broadcasting service to the US in 1998. Murdoch's DBS system will be highly competitive with cable and satellite systems already broadcasting in the US. Murdoch has undertaken joint ventures with MCI and Echostar to gain vital satellite transponder slots. Cable companies may refer Sky to the authorities if the level of output from local television does not fulfill the regulations. Some legislative changes are necessary before Sky can commence broadcasting on its 500 digital channels.

Overlook publishers and be damned
Article Abstract:
Publishers have been overlooked in the midst of concerns for the TV and radio stations involved in the proposed British Broadcasting Bill. They represent a larger annual turnover than the British Broadcasting Corporation, and have access to a wide variety of information for advertising, cross-promotions and have libraries of text and pictures. The latest technology and internet usage is vigorous within the industry, and some companies have already set up sites on the World Wide Web.
