Dispute threatens US digital launch
Article Abstract:
The full commercial roll out of digital TV in the US set for 1999 may be postponed because of a disagreement between the US television regulators and cable operators. William Kennard, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has written a letter informing the US National Cable Television Association and the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association to solve technical problems by Nov. 1, 1998, in order for the production of digital TV sets and cable boxes to push through as planned. Major US TV networks ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox are slated to start sending digital signals by 1999, a timetable that places the US behind the UK, which will launch both digital terrestrial and digital satellite service by the end of 1998.
