In need of speech therapy

Article Abstract:

The British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd (BBC) successfully runs two speech dominated radio stations in the UK. Commercial speech radio has been unable to compete due partly to lack of funding but also due to their unsuccessful attempts to gain a sufficient number of listeners. The BBC spends 79.2 million pounds sterling on Radio 4 and 46.3 million pounds sterling on Radio 5. Radio 5 appeals to mainly men who form 67% of listeners. Talk Radio are also considering focusing their output at men. Irreverent presenters suffer for a high degree of regulation in the UK compared to those in the US.

Time for UK radio to get fresh

Article Abstract:

The UK Radio Authority has taken seriously its duty to widen listener choice, but some observers believe that there is still potential for new ideas in the commercial radio sector. It is still hard to launch new formats in the UK, particularly because of the lack of frequencies. However, the Radio Authority rejects claims that it tends to choose mainstream formats. It also emphasizes that very innovative formats may not necessarily meet the criteria for broadening choice under the terms of the 1990 Broadcasting Act.

Commercial co-operation

Article Abstract:

Commercial radio in the UK has seen strong growth in both revenue and audience numbers over recent years. It is now becoming a mature sector, and operators are aware of the need to constantly boost their competitiveness. Commercial radio companies are working together in many areas, especially through the Commercial Radio Companies Association, even though they still battle against each other for listeners and revenue. It is still necessary for operators to face up to and plan for change.
