Looking good on television

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom terrestrial television station Channel 5 (C5) selected Silver Hammer of Santa Monica, CA, to design its new on-screen identity, with British graphic designers admired but not chosen because of C5's desire to find something different, according to its Head of Creative Services, Glynn Brailsford. Graphic designers primarily work in the fields of channel idents and title sequences. They operate in a highly competitive market and must work within increasingly tight budget controls. The most experienced, older designers remain the most highly regarded, despite the inroads made by younger talents.

Turning on 3DTV

Article Abstract:

Three-dimensional computer animation has been much in demand since the filming of 'Jurassic Park'. The motion picture industry has received a lot of the attention but there is also increasing demand from television. Features in factual programmes, mixed-media productions as well as entire series now are using 3D techniques. It is television work with its smaller budgets which offers more financial risk for the UK animation companies involved and a possible trend for the future could be for them to subcontract work to the Far East to reduce costs.

Combining the voices of East and West

Article Abstract:

The European Union is expected to increase from 15 member states to 25 on May 1 2004, with an overnight 20% growth in population from 378 million to 453 million that would bring eight former communist Eastern European countries into the fold along with Cyprus and Malta. However, very little attention is being paid to the dangers and opportunities it would present especially to the European broadcasters as many member states do have strong film-making traditions that offer an expansion of European markets.
