Marked to rise

Article Abstract:

BBC Director of Regional Broadcasting Mark Byford is in charge of a highly politically sensitive business in light of the Government's devolution proposals, with Byford subsequently required to deal with the effect of change. Byford is the youngest person on the BBC Board of Management team and he is also required to deal with internal politics at the BBC. Regional television programming production will increase, says Byford, while additional local radio stations are unlikely to be merged to achieve cost savings.

Auntie's war of the wannabes

Article Abstract:

Many of the top names in British broadcasting are being tipped to take over as top executives at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), when a new director general and two executive jobs become available after 1998. BBC Director General John Birt will retire in March 2000, leaving room for a successor. The governing body of the BBC has the job of ensuring license-fee money is spent accordingly and in the best interests of the public. Serveral women have been tipped for the jobs, but no ethnic minorities.
