Media summits

Article Abstract:

Media summits require better coverage in the mainstream press as these influential meets further business through the cultivation of informal contacts. However, current press coverage of business transactions scarcely carries adequate criticism and information of programming priorities. Executives of the media interact through panels, in salons run by Colorado's Aspen Institute and at the National Association of Television Program Executives conventions. Discussions in such summits seldom focus on public affairs and news.

Shattering the prism of our own prejudice: when the media reach a consensus, question yourself

Article Abstract:

BBC correspondent Fergal Keane recounts an incident where he learned the value of checking stories. His assistant called him and reported the resignation of Nelson Mandela's opponent Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, which turned out to be his assistant's April Fool's joke. Keane claims that he automatically believed the story because of his own negative feelings about Buthelezi and desire for peace in South Africa.
