Past and present at Wounded Knee
Article Abstract:
Journalists came too late to Wounded Knee, SD, scene of a massacre of 200 native Americans at the hands of US military forces, in 1890. Although the story about native activism should have been covered earlier, they nevertheless, did a good job of it. Their attention was riveted to the place due to the open display of firearms and presence of armored personnel carriers all over the place. Media have a role to play in the termination or extension of the Wounded Knee or Bureau of Indian Affairs occupation.

Polling and "what if" journalism
Article Abstract:
Journalists raised opinion news to a new level of importance. This paved the way for the emergence of 'what if? public opinion journalism.' A turning point in the use of polls by media organizations was the presidential election involving Bill Clinton and Ross Perot. Journalists are very confident in reporting poll outcomes, but the results were often due to the wording and order of questions, not fixed or even assured public opinion.

Ruben Salazar - misunderstood martyr
Article Abstract:
The Mexican-American community and Chicano activists considered Ruben Salazar, Los Angeles Times columnist and news director for Los Angeles television station KMEX, as a martyr. He was killed while covering a major riot in East LA in Aug 1970 when his head was hit by a bullet-shaped teargas projectile fired by a deputy sheriff. The reality of his life and the importance of his work were obscured due to his canonization.
