Political refresher

Article Abstract:

Some US Federal Communications Commission rules on political broadcasting are discussed. Political broadcasting rates aredetermined by the time or period when they were aired. For example, the rules for lowest unit charge periods are followed 45 days immediately before a primary election and 60 days immediately before a general election. The two basic rate principles are to treat competing candidates equally and to treat all candidates in the same level as the most-favored commercial advertisers or even better.

Short-spaced FM stations

Article Abstract:

Some US Federal Communications Commission rules are discussed regarding FM stations. FM stations are authorized by alloting a channel and class to a particular community by a rule making proceeding and then assigning specific facilities by an application proceeding. However, stations can either downgrade or upgrade their class simply by making an application and most non-commercial stations do not go through a rule making stage. Rules on short-spacing are also discussed.

Children's TV commercials

Article Abstract:

FCC has imposed stricter measures on advertisements aired during children's programs. Under the Children's Television Act of 1990, air time restrictions for television commercials have been outlined. Likewise, careful monitoring of products advertised during children's shows should be observed. Fines ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 havebeen imposed on several television stations found to be constant violators of the new law.
