Structural alteration

Article Abstract:

The ITV television network is restructuring its management model to make it a more effective organisation and to enable it to compete with the other UK television networks. The new management council will still consist of members from the 15 franchises which make up the ITV Association, but the council will be controlled by representatives from Carlton Communications, the Granada Media Group and United News and Media. One management official pointed out that the new arrangement will speed up the decision making process. The company will be known as ITV Ltd., from Dec 1997.

Licence plea

Article Abstract:

GMTV in the UK is not making a profit, despite gaining 40% of breakfast television viewers. GMTV paid 37.1 million pounds sterling for its station's licence in 1996, a fee it considers to be much larger than other Independent Television stations pay. Added to the licence fee is a percentage qualifying revenue, bringing the total amount in 1996 to 49 million pounds sterling. Other factors affecting profits include the expected launch of Channel 5, plus other channels due to be launched by cable and satellite.

Pulling power

Article Abstract:

The leak of new terrestrial UK broadcaster Channel 5's draft schedule has been greeted with interest by established rivals, BBC, ITV and Channel 4. The director of Channel 4, John Willis, says that the program lineup is predictable and unsurprising, although its decision to broadcast so-called kid-ult series, such as Dukes of Hazzard, could be a winning formula. Channel 5's stance on its movie and comedy slots is seen by most rivals as a strategic one. Channel 5 will be officially launched in February 1997.
