Talk of the town: after loud pronouncements on signings and a schedule overhaul can Jerry Thomas deliver Talk Radio UK from the doldrums?
Article Abstract:
Jerry Thomas was hired as director of programmes to rescue Talk Radio UK (TRUK) and has already completely changed the station's schedule, with new presenters such as Simon Bates and James Whale. The station has been criticised and has seen poor ratings since its launch in February, although some have praised it for its fresh and effective approach to broadcasting. Thomas joined the BBC in 1982 and became editor of weekend programmes at TV-am in 1984. He was freelance for a time and became editor of GMTV's Sunday Programme in 1994.

Talking loud
Article Abstract:
Since taking over Talk Radio two months ago, Kelvin MacKenzie has changed the station's staff, talent and programming. MacKenzie is hiring ex-colleagues to build a new team of executives and on air talent. Bill Ridley from Live TV was hired as the new programme director. MacKenzie is using press journalists on air, because he says "they can talk" and are "bright about it." MacKenzie is moving the station further into sports programming in competition with BBC Sports.

Counter balance: the furore over the change in the method of calculating the RAJAR figures has resulted in a compromise within the radio industry
Article Abstract:
A new method of compiling radio audience figures has met with opposition even though the original method was becoming unwieldy. The new method appeared to lose around 700,000 listeners from the national commercial stations although listening hours soared. However a compromise has been reached designed to add casual or light listeners back into the ratings.
