Television in post-Soviet Russia: from monolith to Mafia

Article Abstract:

Russian television served as a means of unifying the post-Soviet social consciousness following the August 1991 coup and if managed well, may face a future of lessened political control and increased public service. Power struggles over political and profit interests have led many broadcasters to corrupt financial practices in an effort to circumvent government control. While the post-Soviet broadcasting system is somewhat chaotic, observers hope the television industry can rise above political and economic conflict and work to serve the country in a positive manner.
