The Kerner legacy

Article Abstract:

The National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders led by then Illinois Gov Otto Kerner placed an onus on whites to extend the nation's promise of equal opportunity to all in 1968 while lambasting the news media for alienating blacks and contributing to their despair. The news media reacted to Kerner's and the commission's rebuke with swift and sweeping action in hiring more and more black journalists. Yet despite the initiatives undertaken by news organizations to integrate the newsroom, progress has been painfully slow.

Optimism, pessimism and the Kerner report

Article Abstract:

The National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders and its chairman in 1968, Otto Kerner, were to issue a report on the causes of the racial riots and ways to prevent further outbreaks of violence. The report, which was issued on Mar 1, 1968, has become a landmark in commentary about race relations and the law, has attained canonical status and continues to be a compelling document in 1998, 30 years after its publication.

Goals for the year 2000 and beyond

Article Abstract:

The American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) has appeared to have abandoned its leadership in the newspaper industry's diversity effort in 1998 after 20 years of declaring that newsrooms should reflect the diversity of the US population by year 2000. Whatever the long-term future of the ASNE's initiatives regarding newsroom integration, the campaign has a history that has many lessons for the future.
