The combat correspondent: a look at war reporting, from Caesar's commentaries to cell phones

Article Abstract:

A history of war journalism is examined, focusing on the changes that have taken place since the time of Caesar and the reasons for them. Topics include the fact that, in ancient times, the history of battles were written by the soldiers who fought them; the development of the professional war correspondent; and the impact of democracy, newspaper competition, and communications technology on war journalism.

Compassion fatigue: graphic, complicated stories numb readers and viewers to atrocities

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the printing of graphic photographs of victims of war, genocide, and other human disasters are examined. Topics include audience objections to graphic images, the manner in which even such images fail to capture the reality of the whole situation of which they are a part, and the need for such images to create a just response to atrocities.

The response of soldiers to the death of a much-admired captain in World War II is described. Topics include the delivery of the dead by mule down a mountain trail, dead bodies lying in the moonlight, and the words of soldiers said to their captain, Henry T. Waskow of Belton, Texas.
