The hard cel

Article Abstract:

Children's animated programme characters can often generate more money through merchandising activities than through licensing fees, making distribution rights a viable option for producers and distributers to increase investment. Warner Bros. and Disney dominate the licensing market, however two of the biggest UK earners are Thomas the Tank Engine and the Teletubbies. The market is becoming saturated with almost every successful animated character being marketed in various forms, from quilt covers to lunchboxes.

Money to earn

Article Abstract:

It is relatively easy for television broadcasters to sell the format for entertainment programmes, but this is only the beginning of the process. Indeed, there is a failure rate of around 75% between the granting of an option on a format and a produced programme. There can be long timescales involved in format sales, with transmission taking up to a year. Formats have considerable appeal, but successful deals need substantial attention to detail by the seller.
