Article Abstract:

The appointment of Matthew Bannister as chief executive of BBC production is one of two surprise hirings by the BBC. Bannister, who has a career history in radio and no experience of television, will be responsible for a programme budget of 720 million pounds sterling and a workforce of 4,500. Similarly, Mark Byford, who has no international broadcasting experience, has been appointed chief executive of the World Service.
