We owe the world: why the US news media must cover foreign conflicts

Article Abstract:

The influence the news media plays in world affairs is examined, focusing on the responsiblity journalists have in the coverage of foreign wars and the plight of the economically disadvantaged. Topics include conflict between financial goals and journalistic standards in news organizations, the difference between commercial news and public broadcasting, the growth of civil wars since the end of the Cold War, and the need to report on disputes in one part of the world that may have consequences for another.

War without witnesses: journalists must respect the military's need for secrecy - or face even greater restrictions on coverage

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the need for military secrecy, as it relates to press coverage of military actions, are examined, focusing on the need to protect operational security and the lives of military personnel and the need for the press to cooperate with the military. Topics include the history of military secrecy since ancient times and history of US military and press relations since the Vietnam War.
