Who will be journalists in the next century?
Article Abstract:
A number of trends are likely to be seen within the make-up of the journalistic population in the US in the 21st century. It is possible that the overall proportion of women in US journalism will not increase much above one-third in the foreseeable future, even though women are now in the majority in most journalism schools. Similarly, it seems that there will only be large rises in the number of minority journalists in mainstream news media if opportunities for progression and increased responsibilities are offered. However, journalists in the 21st century will be more representative of society as a whole.

Lawyers, voyeurs and vigilantes: journalists and our democratic institutions are in a dangerously deformed relationship
Article Abstract:
Journalists must be aware that they become guilty of worshipping false gods if they assess their success only by the size of their readership or audience, by their incomes or by the profits of their companies. It can be argued that media coverage of the scandal surrounding the private life of President Bill Clinton indicates that journalists no longer have a stake in the republic. The political process itself, along with the role of journalists within it, seems to be eroding the foundations of democratic life.

Who's a journalist? - II: welcome the new journalists on the Internet
Article Abstract:
It is sometimes assumed that those who publish information on the World Wide Web cannot be regarded as journalists. They have nobody to edit their work, and it is very difficult to determine whether the information they publish is true. However, it can be argued that it is necessary to actively support the new on-line journalists, designating them as proper journalists. In this way, they will be encouraged to subscribe to recognized journalistic values.
