Yellow Perch research and management in Lake Michigan: Evaluating progress in a cooperative effort, 1997-2001

Article Abstract:

The lake Michigan Yellow Perch Task Group (YPTG) was formed to develop a multi-agency research initiative in order to identify the likely causes for yellow perch recruitment failure. There has been substantial progress in the multi-agency effort and it also serves as a model for agencies to work collaboratively to address important management questions with a sound research strategy.

The efforts of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration to get more funding for the management of hurricane hazards by the fisheries industry are described. The increase in the funding of Farm Bill Conservation Programs by the United States Congress is discussed.

Article Abstract:

Studies show that only 10% of the large fishes are left in the sea and that industrial fishery takes only 10 to 15 years to reduce any new species. Japanese long lining data suggests that untapped reservoirs of large fish will be more myth than truth.
