Measuring the energy savings from home improvement investments: evidence from monthly billing data

Article Abstract:

A study of 'energy paradox,' the belief that consumers unreasonable apply high hurdle rates to investments in energy-saving, is conducted. The phenomenon is a significant factor in the formulation of energy policies for the past 20 years since 1979. The findings, which utilized a unique set of data for attic insulation, revealed a median estimate that is nearly identical to the discount rate offered for the investment. The results provided a weak case for the continued application of the 'energy paradox.'

Measuring the performance of a protected infant industry: the case of Brazilian microcomputers

Article Abstract:

Hedonic methods covering an eight-year time-series data set on price and performance were used to evaluate the Brazilian microcomputer industry and compare it against international standards. The industry indicated a price/performance ratio that moved at a comparable level with international rates. However, this did not allow the Brazilian industry to catch up with its leading global counterparts.

Measuring oligopsony power with shadow prices: U.S. markets for pulpwood and sawlogs

Article Abstract:

Empirical analysis is done to measure oligopsony power in factor inputs using duality and shadow prices by developing an econometric model. Market power of processors of timber inputs from 1958-1988 in sawmilling and paperboard is analyzed using the model. The study shows that market power for sawmilling and paperboard is due to competition rather than monopsonistic factors.
