Platform investments and volatile exchange rates: direct investment in the U.S. by Japanese electronic companies
Article Abstract:
The investment histories of 95 Japanese electronics companies were evaluated using a repeated hazard model to gauge the extent of subsequent foreign direct investment in the US by the firms, given the effects of previous investment, industry characteristics and exchange rate movements. Results indicate that investment behavior is highly diverse among the firms. Investment decisions reflect the technological capacities of the firms and their history of previous investments in the US. Timing of foreign investment appear to be precipitated by real exchange rate movements.

Japanese firms and the decision to invest abroad: business groups and regional core networks
Article Abstract:
Micro-data on the conduct of Japanese firms in the electronics and precision-machinery industries was used to evaluate the factors accounting for Japanese direct foreign investment decisions in Southeast Asia, Europe and North America. Results indicate that investment in Southeast Asia is based on human resources and prompted by inter-company links within horizontal and vertical business groups. The ownership of firm-specific intangible assets based on R&D and marketing initiatives is the major determinant of investment in North America and Europe.

Growth, economies of scale, and targeting in Japan: 1955-1990
Article Abstract:
An empirical analysis was carried out to determine whether Japanese industrial policy has been successful because it targets high growth or high productivity growth. The study analyzes Japan's employment of different industrial policy tools. Results indicate that the Japanese diverted resources into areas other than high-growth industries, and thus targeting did not beneficially affect the factor productivities of the industries examined.
