Process flow scheduling calculations
Article Abstract:
Process flow scheduling (PFS) calculations are derived for a chemical firm producing three grades of a viscous liquid product. PFS systems use the process structure to guide the scheduling logic and can be applied by both process and repetitive manufacturing firms. In the calculations, reverse-flow scheduling is illustrated in a make-to-stock environment. In addition, processor-dominated scheduling with finite forward scheduling is utilized in stages 1 and 2, while material-dominated scheduling is employed in stage 0.

A question of matching rather than scheduling
Article Abstract:
Proper scheduling maintenance for Air Force C-130 aircraft involves the prevention of mismatches concerning the availability of the aircraft and a new wing kit which would prolong its use. Scheduling maintenance problems include the designation of wing kits in the production sequence to match for a specific aircraft. Such problems can be avoided by using a job scheduling algorithm and a spreadsheet which non-mathematical managers consider user-friendly as compared to linear programming.

A note on "the effect of sampling variability on statistical order point computation." (response to T.S. Vaughan, Production and Inventory Management Journal, 1995)
Article Abstract:
A study on the effects of sampling variability on the computation of the statistical order point is evaluated. The study showed that sampling variability when estimating the mean and standard deviation of demand during lead time affects the value of the order point and results in low 'actual' service levels. It is proposed that low service levels can be partially corrected by using a t-distribution factor when sample sizes are small.
